Union Pacific train cars derails between Kearney and Gibbon

KEARNEY — Two Union Pacific train cars derailed between Kearney and Gibbon amid the severe weather in the area during the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 16,

According to Union Pacific Railroad, around 4 a.m., two intermodal train cars derailed, one in the upright position, the other car was on its side.

The incident occurred about four miles east of Kearney near the intersection of Poole Avenue and Nebraska Highway 30, Union Pacific stated. No one was injured.

The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department was contacted and was on scene shortly after the derailment.

Buffalo County Emergency Manager Darrin Lewis said he investigated the scene and there was no hazmat danger and no obstruction of the roadway. He said the scene contained Union Pacific property.

It had not been confirmed Tuesday morning if the severe weather that passed through central Nebraska during the overnight hours played a factor.

The incident is under investigation by Union Pacific.
